MT’s Banana Belt

WOW!!  Amazing February weather…upper 40’s and sunny!  If this weather keeps up we’ll be riding the high mountains by late May.

Couldn’t help but stop for some shots by Lake Koocanusa.

Check the iRide Calendar for the details on the  Kabin Fever Krusher road ride out to the Amish hamlet of West Kootenai in early April.

Dirt, Mud, Ice & Sand

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Woke up to a beautiful sunny Saturday morning, although still a bit on the chilly side.  For the past week I have been planning to take the mtb out for the first ride of the season…on dirt that is.  As the weekend drew near I found myself checking the weather online two, three or four times a day hoping the forecast for a dry, sunny Saturday would hold true.

Almost looks like spring...at least for the first few miles. Yes, that is dry dirt!

The weather cooperated and I got out for a great ride.  Dirt, sand, snow, ice and mud…what more could you ask for!

Looking west at the Canadian border and very icy conditions.

Made my way down to Lake Koocanusa for a little beach combing.

Riding the Lake Koocanusa sand...for miles.

Can’t beat February in Montana!

Sun and sand...what more could you ask for in February.

I know it won’t last but it sure was a nice taste of what’s to come!

Winter Riding

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

It’s early February and winter is by no means over up here in Eureka.  After some early big snow we’ve been pretty dry and warm with most days in the mid 30’s.  I’ve been itching to get outside on my cross bike but the warm days and below freezing nights has brought lots of icy conditions.  Roads that are normally snow-packed have been more akin to ice rinks.

The past few weeks of high 30’s and even some low 40’s has pretty much dried out all the best roads around so I got out for a nice road ride last Wednesday.  Refreshing is the best way to describe riding in the cool winter air.  Beautiful as well, the winter scenery can be just as spectacular as the summer.  I was even joined by some wildlife as I rolled south from the Canadian border.

Well, hopefully we won’t see much more snow in the valley as it’s about time for me to start putting in some long training days.  I will also be starting group rides on Saturdays pretty quick so check my ride calendar over the next week or two.  Or if your looking to get out on the bike give me a call, I’m always up for a ride and Eureka is the ‘bannana belt’ of Montana.

Ride on,

T.
